MIFF showcases biggest range of Hong Kong films in a decade
The largest Hong Kong film series in a decade will be presented at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).Six Hong Kong supernatural films will be screened under the program ‘A Perfect Midnight: Haunted Hong Kong’ during the Festival which will be held until 17 August. In addition, the premiere of martial arts epic ‘The Grandmaster’ by Hong Kong renowned Director Mr Wong Kar-wai, will surely add glamour to the Hong Kong series.
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) is delighted to sponsor and act as a cultural partner for the Festival.
Acting Director of the HKETO, Mr Bernard Lo, said in recent years, Hong Kong filmmakers have successfully straddled both Eastern and Western markets. “Hong Kong’s supernatural films have a large following with its colourful combination of action, comedy and horror,” Mr Lo said.
“The ‘Haunted Hong Kong’ program gives Melbourne audiences a taste of Hong Kong’s twist on the supernatural genre and shows how an unconventional combination of vampires, slapstick humour and kung fu can actually create box office hits.”
MIFF CEO Maria Amato said HKETO’s sponsorship meant audiences can enjoy Hong Kong supernatural films from the 1960s to present.
The six supernatural films to be screened at the festival are: ‘Rigor Mortis’, ‘The Imp’, ‘Mid-Nightmare’, ‘Mr Vampire’, ‘Rouge’ and ‘Encounters of a Spooky Kind’. “We are delighted to present such an extensive Hong Kong film program. It’s very rare that Melbourne audiences can enjoy classic Hong Kong films like ‘Mr Vampire’ and new releases like ‘Rigor Mortis’ side by side - there’s something for everyone in this program,” Ms Amato said.
Aside from the screening of Hong Kong films, HKETO is also co-presenting the ‘Talking Pictures’ event entitled ‘Spook and the City: Hong Kong Supernatural’ to be held on 14 August. This forum will dissect the Hong Kong supernatural film genre, its impact on global cinema and feature Asian film expert Andrew Leavold, Christian Were of Madman Entertainment, film writer Michael Helms and academic Michael Honig.
