Hong Kong House opened for public visit
Hong Kong House, home of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) welcomed more than 1,000 visitors during its open day held yesterday (November 6).Built in 1891, Hong Kong House is a heritage-listed building. For much of its life, it was a hotel with a banking chamber on the ground floor. It was converted to office and retail use in the late 1980s. It currently houses HKETO, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Its ornate Victorian appearance with decorative stone façade combining with the adjoining Victorian buildings make a significant contribution to the appreciation of Sydney’s Central Business District.
Opening of Hong Kong House was part of Sydney Open 2016 presented by the Sydney Living Museum to provide opportunities for people to access the historical buildings in Sydney. HKETO has been participating in this annual event since 2012.
The Director of HKETO Mr Arthur Au said, “Hong Kong House has been a central feature in the cityscape. It is a beautiful example of architecture. Visitors at yesterday’s opening had the chance to explore the architectural features of this historic building and learn more about Hong Kong.” During the open day, video shows and exhibitions were arranged to enable visitors to know more about Hong Kong as the Asia’s World City while appreciating the characteristics of Hong Kong House.
