HKETO Sydney participated at the South Island Lantern Festival and Business Forum in New Zealand

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) once again participated at the South Island Lantern Festival and Business Forum in Christchurch, New Zealand, held from 9 to 11 March. Lanterns featuring the Star Ferry and Hong Kong's skyline were showcased to promote Hong Kong’s culture and vibrancy during the Festival, and a workshop to promote Hong Kong’s advantages for the Belt and Road (B&R) was organised as part of the Business Forum on 9 March.

The South Island Lantern Festival is one of Christchurch’s biggest cultural festivals. The two-day event this year was attended by an estimated 55,000 people. During the Festival, the South Island Lantern Business Forum was also organised to engage the business community. As part of the South Island Lantern Business Forum, HKETO hosted a workshop entitled “New Zealand’s Path to the Belt and Road”, which provided an opportunity for participants from the business sector of New Zealand to discover Hong Kong’s advantages as both a destination itself and as a gateway to China and the Belt and Road, and Hong Kong’s unequalled opportunities for New Zealand companies across a variety of industries.

Speaking at the workshop, the Deputy Director of the HKETO, Ms Winnie Chan, said that the unique advantages that Hong Kong enjoys under ‘one country, two systems’, our robust legal system, our advanced infrastructure and our strength as the world’s freest economy all make Hong Kong the preferred location for doing business in Asia.

Ms Chan said that with the expertise, experience and connections, as well as Hong Kong’s advantageous location in Asia and the expanding network of cross-boundary transport infrastructure with Mainland China, Hong Kong offered New Zealand companies countless opportunities to get involved in the B&R Initiative and the Greater Bay area.

Head of Invest Hong Kong for Australia and New Zealand, Mr Luca de Leonardis, also presented to the audience the investment opportunities in Hong Kong for various sectors and the support that InvestHK could offer to interested investors.
