Hong Kong offers abundant career opportunities for Australian students
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney has promoted career opportunities in Hong Kong to university students in Sydney....
At a career talk co-hosted by the HKETO and the Hong Kong Student Associations of four major universities in Sydney held on last Friday (October 23), the Acting Director of HKETO Bernard Lo spoke about how Hong Kong’s unique advantages provide many opportunities for young people to pursue their career in the city.
Briefing more than 80 students from the University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and Macquarie University, Mr Lo emphasised that there was a constant demand for skilled English-speakers in Hong Kong.
“As an international business centre, Hong Kong has a high demand for professionals in the services sectors. For example, Hong Kong’s Financial Services Development Council released a report earlier this year saying employers in the sector struggled to find talents in asset and wealth management, private and investment banking as well as areas such as financial consultancy and insurance.”
At the event, Mr Lo highlighted the benefits of working in Hong Kong, including the favourable tax system.
“Hong Kong’s low tax rate means employees keep what they earn. The income tax rate is capped at 15%, but most people are paying far less than that under the progressive rates system.”
Mr Lo mentioned Hong Kong is a magnet for multinational companies as well as start-ups, meaning it offers a spectrum of working opportunities and conditions. He added that those who are interested in taking their career forward in Asia should consider Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong is known as Asia’s World City and it’s a great place for those looking for overseas work experience. The city is not only a gateway to China, but the rest of Asia too.”
Mr Lo also highlighted the Admission Scheme for the Second Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents launched by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Government. The scheme aims to attract the second generation of Chinese Hong Kong permanent residents who have emigrated overseas to return to Hong Kong.
Head of Operations, China and International Business, Mass Transit Railway Corporation, Mr Ivan Lai also spoke at the event, briefing the students on career opportunities offered by the Hong Kong-based corporation.

Year of the Ram continues to offer diverse business opportunities in Hong Kong for New Zealand
The Year of the Ram would provide huge opportunities in Hong Kong for companies and people in New Zealand, said the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO), Mr Arthur Au, at the Chinese New Year reception in Wellington on March 3....
More than 100 business, community and political leaders attended the reception.
Speaking to the guests, Mr Au said that under the principle of "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong continued to maintain a free market economy, a simple and low tax regime, an independent judiciary, free flow of capital and freedom of speech and assembly. These unique advantages, together with its close economic and trade relationship with Mainland China, underpinned the success of Hong Kong.
“We will continue to seize every opportunity to improve Hong Kong’s position as the premier gateway to Mainland China, including making investments in infrastructure to enhance its connectivity,” said Mr Au.
“We will also take a more proactive approach to recruiting overseas talents and professionals from outside Hong Kong, such as introduction of a pilot scheme to attract the second generation of Chinese Hong Kong permanent residents who have emigrated overseas to work in Hong Kong.”
He noted that the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect had been launched last November, allowing investors all over the world to invest in the Shanghai Stock Exchange through the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and vice versa.
“Discussion on similar connection with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange has started,” he added.
"On March 1, a new agreement for basic liberalisation for trade in services between Hong Kong and Guangdong came into effect, opening up over 95 per cent of services trade subsectors in Guangdong to the Hong Kong services industry. All these will provide greater business opportunities for companies and people in New Zealand."
“Hong Kong and New Zealand have all along enjoyed close bilateral relationship. There are 15 bilateral agreements between Hong Kong and New Zealand, including the New Zealand-Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Agreement which is Hong Kong’s first Free Trade Agreement,” said Mr Au.
He was confident that Hong Kong and New Zealand would continue to work ever closer in the years to come.
The HKETO, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Invest Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Australia Business Association and the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association are jointly hosting Chinese New Year receptions in major cities of Australia and New Zealand between February 24 and March 11 to celebrate the Year of the Ram. The HKETO is taking the opportunity to showcase Hong Kong's artistic talents to guests at the receptions.

Sydney Dragon Boat Race Gets a Dose of Hong Kong Energy
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), the Supporting Partner for the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year festival, competed in the Community/Not-for-Profit race during the annual Dragon Boat race on Sunday 1 March in Darling Harbour....
This year’s HKETO team is represented by staff from HKETO, those with a strong Hong Kong connection and Hong Kong community members in Sydney. The team also includes university students completing a two-month internship at HKETO during the summer holidays. The team members perfected their paddling skills in Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont with the help of Dragon Boat NSW, the state governing body for dragon boating.
For the special occasion - which marks the finale of the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year celebrations - Darling Harbour was dressed up in festive colours, with Dragon Boats dotted across Cockle Bay Wharf. HKETO also hosted a marquee stall to promote Hong Kong culture and festivals in the city during the races.
The tradition of Dragon Boats began over 2,000 years ago in China to mark the death of patriotic poet Qu Yuan who drowned himself. Legend has it that the local townsfolk attempted to save Qu Yuan by beating drums to scare fish away and to prevent them from eating his body.
