HKETO Sydney has organised a series of arts and cultural events in 2017 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR.... Cultural elements play a major part in these celebration events including Hong Kong Philharmonic’s premier tour to Australia, Cantonese opera performance by Hong Kong children, Chinese Essay and handwriting Competition for Australian students and joint performance by Melbourne-based Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra and Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra. These activities help strengthen the cultural ties between Hong Kong and Australia.
Here you can recapture a show by talented musicians from HKYWCA Chinese Orchestra. They were playing for the members of the public in Melbourne at the Federation Square before their joint concert with Chao Feng at Melbourne Recital Centre. The show featured Hong Kong classics and Australian folk music, touching the Australian audience with their passion for music.

Sydney Open 2017
Hong Kong House, home of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) welcomed more than 800 visitors during its open day held yesterday (November 5)....
Opening of Hong Kong House was part of Sydney Open 2017, presented by the Sydney Living Museum to provide opportunities for people to appreciate historical buildings and urban landscapes in Sydney. HKETO has been participating in this annual event since 2012.
Built in 1891, Hong Kong House is a heritage-listed building, converted from a hotel with a banking chamber to office and retail use in the late 1980s. Its ornate Victorian appearance with its decorative stone façade combines with the adjoining Victorian buildings to make a significant contribution to the appreciation of Sydney’s Central Business District.
During the open day, exhibition panels and photos showing Hong Kong’s uniqueness were on display, along with videos of the city’s landscape. Branded souvenirs were given away to visitors to further promote Hong Kong.








Hong Kong dragon parade at OzAsia 2017
Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney, once again joined the OzAsia 2017 in Adelaide. With the support from the HKETO, Hong Kong Dragon lantern parade was featured at the Moon Lantern Festival on 1 October at Elder Park to celebrate the Festival with members of public in Adelaide....Presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre, OzAsia Festival 2017 was one of the most important international art festivals in Australia. This year, OzAsia was held from 21 September to 8 October, featuring contemporary arts of theatre, films, dance, music and visual arts from across Asia.


Chinese Essay and Handwriting Competition 2017 Award Presentation Ceremony
About 60 students were commended at the Chinese Essay and Handwriting Competition 2017 award presentation ceremony on October 19 for their remarkable achievements in Chinese learning....
The ceremony was held at Ashfield Public School. Officiating guests included the Acting Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Ms Winnie Chan; the Chairman of the National Chinese Language Education Council of NSW Inc. (CLEC), Dr Zhang Xuefeng, and former Member of Legislative Council, Parliament of New South Wales, Mr Peter Wong.
The Chinese Essay and Handwriting Competition 2017 was jointly organised by HKETO and CLEC. In addition to essay writing, this year's competition introduced handwriting event and attracted more than 240 students to join.
The competition was one of the celebration events held in Australia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. More photos here.






Career talks at universities
Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney and the Hong Kong Police Force jointly organised career talks at the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney on 19 and 21 September respectively....Ms Winnie Chan, Deputy Director of the HKETO Sydney, introduced the latest development of Hong Kong and pathways to various government positions with the details of the Common Recruitment Examination and Administrative Officer. Representative from the Hong Kong Police Force also introduced the functionality of the Hong Kong Police Force and the opportunities to work for Disciplinary Forces.



2017 Chinese Essay and Handwriting Competition
Co-organized by the NSW Chinese Language Education Council (CLEC) and the HKETO Sydney, the annual 2017 Chinese Writing and Hand Writing Competition was successfully held on September 16 at Ashfield Boys' High School. ...
Besides essay writing, this year, Chinese handwriting and Chinese calligraphy were also included for the first time to encourage more students to participate. Overall the competition attracted more than 230 students – from 9-year-old to university students - to join the competition.
The event was part of the celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. More photos here.






Hong Kong 20: Developments and Opportunities Business Forum
About 200 attendees from business and political sectors attended a business forum in Sydney, Australia today to get updated on the latest developments and business opportunities in Hong Kong and Australia. ...
The Hong Kong 20: Developments and Opportunities Business Forum was jointly organised by the HKETO and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR.
In welcoming the guests, the Director of HKETO, Mr Arthur Au said, “The forum seeks to connect business and political sectors on both sides and provide them with insights into the latest developments and business opportunities in the areas of innovation, trade and investment, and infrastructure.”
The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang spoke at the forum to update the attendees on Hong Kong’s developments and opportunities in the innovation and technology. View more photos here.





HK20 Fun Fun Carnival
HK20 Fun Fun Carnival, organised by the Hong Kong-Australia Business Association New South Wales Chapter, with the support of the HKETO, Sydney, was held at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour last Saturday (September 9)! ...
The Carnival offered Sydneysiders a fun-filled weekend with unique Hong Kong cultural experience including Cantonese Opera, Tai Chi, lion dancing and Chinese calligraphy.
A Hawker Bazaar was set up for visitors to enjoy Hong Kong's signature street food and drinks such as egg waffles, pineapple buns and Hong Kong-style milk tea.
Officiating at the opening of the carnival, the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, said Sydney and Hong Kong shared the same passion for great food, quality life and a lovely harbour in the middle of the City.
As part of the celebration events for the 20th anniversary of HKSAR by HKETO in Australia, HK20 Fun Fun Carnival aimed to promote Hong Kong as a tourist, food and culture destination. More photos here.






The Secretary for Innovation and Technology met with Hong Kong diaspora
The Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Nicholas W Yang, met with Hong Kong people at a lunch reception on 7 September on the latest developments of Hong Kong. Mr Yang continued his three-day visit to forge closer ties between Hong Kong and Australia on innovation and technology. ... More photos here.




Joint performance of Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra with Hong Kong YWCA
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR, Melbourne-based Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra and Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra jointly presented a Chinese music concert in Melbourne on August 19. ...
The "HK 20 & Chao Feng 35" concert, supported by the HKETO, Sydney, also marked the 35th anniversary of the founding of Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra.
The performance featured traditional and contemporary compositions performed with 35 different traditional instruments and showcased collaboration between the music talent of Hong Kong and Australia.

Gala dinner held in Sydney to celebrate HKSAR's 20th Anniversary
HKETO Sydney hosted a gala dinner on July 25 in Sydney to celebrate Hong Kong SAR’s 20th Anniversary....
Director of HKETO, Arthur Au, delivered a speech saying Hong Kong and Australia had recently launched the free trade agreement negotiations, at which the agreement will further strengthen the economic links and create more opportunities for Australian companies in Asia through Hong Kong.
During the event, guests were served with Hong Kong-style cuisine such as egg tarts, followed by Cantonese Opera performed by talented young artists travelling from Hong Kong.
About 300 guests attended the event, including Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Julie Bishop; Shadow Treasurer, Mr Chris Bowen; Premier of New South Wales, Ms Gladys Berejiklian, and Deputy Leader of the Opposition of New South Wales, Mr Michael Daley. Chinese Ambassador to Australia, Mr Cheng Jingye, and Chinese Consul General in Sydney, Mr Gu Xiaojie also attended the event.

Hong Kong Children’s Choir fund-raising concert
The renowned Hong Kong Children’s Choir, the world largest children choir, performed a fund-raising concert at the City Recital Hall Sydney on 18 July. Performance included songs from Hong Kong and Western regions, ranging from Renaissance to pop jazz, which showcased the unique culture of East meets West in Hong Kong.... The concert was sponsored by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney, and to raise fund for cancer support service group CanRevive. More photos here. Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Executive Master visited Hong Kong House
A delegation of 13 members from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Executive Master in Digital Leadership Study Mission visited Hong Kong House on 26 June. Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and InvestHK provided briefings on their works and the bilateral relationship between Hong Kong and Australia....




Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's Premiere Tour in Australia
Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra made its debut in Australia with performance at Arts Centre Melbourne on May 4 and Sydney Opera House on May 5.... The concerts, marking the start of HKETO's celebration events for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, received enthusiastic and overwhelming responses from the audience. Hong Kong Polytechnic University China MBA students visited Hong Kong House
Over 30 MBA students undertaking the Mainland China programme of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and alumni of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Australia) Association visited Hong Kong House on March 9.... During their visit, Bernard Lo, Deputy Director of HKETO introduced the history of Hong Kong House and the work of HKETO. They also visited the "One Belt One Road" exhibition panels. City of Sydney Chinese New Year Dragon Boat Races 2017
Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO), once again formed the Hong Kong Team to participate in the City of Sydney's Dragon Boat Races. Twenty Hong Kong team paddlers competed at the races held in Darling Harbour yesterday (February 12)....After four rounds of keen competitions, Hong Kong Team grabbed the third place in the Community/Not-for-Profit race.
Hong Kong Team comprised staff from HKETO, those with a strong Hong Kong connection, Hong Kong students in Australia, and Hong Kong community members in Sydney. To prefect their skills, Hong Kong team started their training from January in Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont with the assistance of Dragon Boat NSW, the state governing body for dragon boating.
During the races, HKETO also operated a Hong Kong stall in the venue to distribute free souvenirs with Hong Kong characteristic to members of the public to enhance their understanding of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong celebrated the Year of Rooster at Auckland Lantern Festival 2017
To celebrate the Year of the Rooster with New Zealanders, HKETO joined the Auckland’s largest Chinese New Year festival – Auckland Lantern Festival 2017, from 10 – 12 February, at the Auckland Domain....
Eight Hong Kong Pillar Lanterns were displayed at the festival, showcasing the diversity, energy and spirits of Hong Kong in day and night versions. Free give-away souvenirs were also distributed to the members of public to enhance their understanding of Hong Kong.
