COVID-19 updates

Entry to Australia:
From 12:01am on 11 March 2023, people travelling to Australia from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, are not required to show evidence of a negative pre-departure test for COVID-19.

Entry to New Zealand:
Travellers are encouraged to take a RAT if they have COVID-19 symptoms when they arrive in New Zealand by air. If tested positive, they must self-isolate for 7 days and should follow up with a PCR test from a community testing centre or healthcare provider.

All pre-departure and post-arrival quarantine and testing requirements have been removed.

The Deputy Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Henry Mak, attended the Christmas Lunch organised by the New South Wales Chapter, Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 16 December. ...Stressing that Hong Kong will continue to be the prime partner for businesses, Mr Mak shared with participants the unlimited opportunities and support for Hong Kong from the Central Government under various national development plans including the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Greater Bay Area development. Mr Mak also highlighted the bright future of Hong Kong as outlined by the Chief Executive in her 2021 Policy Address. Mr Mak looked forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with interlocutors in Australia next year.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney organised the Hong Kong Movie Night – Anita on 9 December. Around 110 people from the Hong Kong community in Sydney attended the screening event to watch the blockbuster biopic of the late queen of Canto-pop Anita Mui. ... In her welcoming speech, the Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, said that the Movie Night was the first event organised by HKETO after Sydney has emerged from lockdown. She stressed that connecting with the Hong Kong community and promoting the arts and culture of Hong Kong have all along been the key areas of work of HKETO and the Hong Kong Government also spares no effort to promote the development of Hong Kong film industry, including nurturing budding directors and scriptwriting talents through the Film Development Fund.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Business Awards Event organised by the New South Wales Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 2 December. ... Miss Lim gave the audience an update on the latest development of Hong Kong by highlighting various top international rankings on business and trade Hong Kong has achieved. She pointed out that with the National Security Law and improvements to the electoral system, Hong Kong is back on the right track of “One Country, Two Systems” and it will continue to be a prime partner in exploring benefits arising from the continuing development of the Mainland and its deepening integration with the Asian region, notably the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Central Government and the Greater Bay Area development. Miss Lim also shared that Hong Kong is very excited about the entry into force of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement in January next year and is actively striving for early accession to this largest Free Trade Agreement in the world.

Miss Lim also shared with the participants that next year will be the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and a series of celebration activities, including receptions, seminars and performances, will be organised.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the “Food and Wine Appreciation Dinner" organised by the Victoria Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 26 November in Melbourne.... Miss Lim shared with the participants some highlights of the vibrant wine industry in Hong Kong, which saw wine imports from Australia reaching the top three in 2020. She also gave the participants an overview on Hong Kong's resilient business outlook underpinned by various record-high statistics of business operations and start-ups in Hong Kong in 2021, and stressed that Hong Kong will continue to develop as an international financial, trade, transportation and legal centre, as well as international innovation and technology, aviation, cultural exchanges and regional IP trading centre with the support from the Central Government's 14th Five-Year Plan.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney organised an online career talk on 30 September. Our Deputy Director, Mr Henry Mak, shared with Hong Kong students studying in Australia and New Zealand an overview of the job market in Hong Kong... and the various schemes and initiatives of the Government for attracting talents to Hong Kong. Mr Mak also provided the students with details on the career opportunities in the civil service in Hong Kong, especially the Administrative Officer Grade, and the recruitment exercise in Hong Kong this year. HKETO would continue to share relevant information with the students to help them plan for the future.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended the "Trade and Export – Hong Kong" Seminar hosted by Department for Trade and Investment South Australia and the South Australia Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 27 September. ...Miss Lim said that despite the challenges of COVID-19 at the moment, Hong Kong will continue to actively integrate into the new overall development of the Mainland and capture the opportunities arising from various national development plans, notably the Greater Bay Area development and the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Central Government. Miss Lim also highlighted that Hong Kong is Asia’s pre-eminent wine trading and distribution centre thanks to its long-standing experience in the wine trade, world-class logistics infrastructure and zero wine duties. She sent her warmest wishes to attendees who will join the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair in November.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended a seminar hosted by the Western Australia Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on August 18 ...for promoting Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology hub. Miss Lim gave the attendees an update on the latest development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. She said that Hong Kong was encouraged for the first time in the National 14th Five-Year Plan to develop as an international innovation and technology hub and the Hong Kong Government has committed over HK$100 billion to promote innovation and technology development. Miss Lim also highlighted that the Government is pressing ahead with the development of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park.

The Deputy Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Henry Mak, virtually attended the “Top Lessons for Business: COVID and Beyond” event hosted by the NSW Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on June 30.... Mr Mak gave the attendees an update on the latest COVID-19 situation in Hong Kong and and the vaccination campaign to build an immune barrier in Hong Kong. He said that despite the challenges of COVID-19, under “One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong will continue to play the unique roles as a gateway, a springboard and an intermediary. Hong Kong will also actively integrate to the new overall development of the Mainland and capture the opportunities arising from the national development plans, in particular the full support and recognition of the Central Authorities reflected in the recent National 14th Five-Year Plan.

Direct Dialogue with the Chief Executive of HKSAR

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, on May 6 addressed more than 200 participants from the business community in New Zealand during an online dialogue..., in which she highlighted how Hong Kong's uniqueness under "One Country, Two Systems" makes it an ideal gateway for businesses and investment between Mainland China and New Zealand. Mrs Lam said that Hong Kong has been enjoying close ties with New Zealand over the years, with New Zealand in 2010 becoming the first foreign economy to enter into a free trade agreement with Hong Kong, and pointed out that Hong Kong looks forward to strengthening such ties by joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Mrs Lam assured the participants that Hong Kong's future prospects are bright as the city's traditional strengths such as a free and open economy, the rule of law and judicial independence remain as robust as ever. The webinar was organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney, co-organised by Invest Hong Kong and supported by the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association as well as the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

She gave an update on the latest developments in Hong Kong, including the development of the city as an international innovation and technology hub. With the Greater Bay Area an important entry point for Hong Kong, there would be lots of opportunities for businesses in Australia and New Zealand, and Hong Kong would be their perfect partner in tapping the business potential, capitalising on the unique advantages under "One Country Two Systems" and Hong Kong's position as the international financial centre, Ms Chan added. Mr Mak shared that HKETO, Sydney would continue to connect with interlocutors in the virtual arena despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and organise online events to promote Hong Kong.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Ms Winnie Chan, along with Deputy Director Mr Henry Mak, virtually attended the Chinese New Year Networking Event hosted by the Victoria Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association (HKABA) on February 10.... In celebration of the Year of the Ox, Ms Chan wished the attendees a healthy and rewarding year ahead. She gave an update on the latest developments in Hong Kong, noting that Hong Kong has demonstrated the resilience and stability of its financial system in the faces of pandemic and global economic downturn. One of the key developments to further strengthen Hong Kong’s competitive edges would be the development of the city as an international IT hub, with many exciting collaborative and innovative projects in the pipeline. With the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area an important entry point for Hong Kong, there are lots of opportunities for businesses in Victoria and that Hong Kong will definitely be their partner in tapping the business potential, Ms Chan added. Mr Mak said HKETO will continue to connect with our interlocutors in the virtual arena despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and organise virtual events for the promotion of Hong Kong. Ms Chan and Mr Mak were then joined by Head of Invest HK Dr Luca De Leonardis and Head of Public Relations of HKETO Sydney Ms Joey Lee for a toast to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous Year of the Ox!

Held online on January 18 and 19 under the theme “Reshaping the World Economic Landscape”, AFF is Asia's premier platform for global leaders in government, finance and business to exchange insights, intelligence as well as business and investment opportunities. Before the start of live streaming, Ms Chan gave the attendees an update on the latest developments in Hong Kong. She said that as an international financial centre, Hong Kong has demonstrated the resilience and stability of the financial system in the faces of pandemic and global economic downturn.
